Recovering data from a physically damaged hard drive requires careful diagnostics, specialized equipment, and cautious handling. Here is a real case from Recovery.uz.

The drive and the fault

The drive was a Seagate ST1000DL002-9TT153 (Bogart family, ID 4F). It was not detected by the system, showed signs of serious physical damage, and had previously been examined by several technicians without a successful recovery.

The casing was deformed after drops, and the platters were damaged. During the initial inspection, we also found that the drive had previously been opened and the platters touched by hand, which made further recovery more difficult.

Diagnostics and preparation

The platters were carefully cleaned to remove fingerprints and contamination. An attempt to move them into another drive casing did not produce a result, so the subsequent work continued with the original casing.

Work performed

  • Strong vibration was identified, and the effect of platter deformation on internal airflow was taken into account.
  • The casing was secured in a specific position to reduce vibration and stabilize reading.
  • The ROM chip was transferred to functioning electronics to restore controller operation.
  • Two donor drives were used to replace damaged components.
  • The drive was read using a PC-3000 Express system with Data Extractor Express.

Outcome

According to the original case report, about 95% of the information was read. The remaining portion was recovered with errors, but the data was stable enough to use. The client received almost all of the important information back.

Conclusion

Data recovery may still be possible even after serious mechanical damage. The original article advises not to power up or open a damaged drive outside appropriate specialist conditions, and to hand it to a specialist as early as possible.
